and we're off to a great start..

At the end of morning walk, the intermediate students say the pledge outside. We are still learning The Pledge of Allegiance and will soon say it with the older students each morning. We are teaching your children to respect the flag and we ask that you do too. If you are walking past during the time the children are saying the pledge please stop walking, join in if you’d like, and wait until they are finished to walk through. Thank you for you help and consideration. It is truly appreciated.

Thoughts on Kindergarten:
Remember that children learn through play. Sometimes you may ask your child, "What did you learn in school?" The answer may be "nothing", or "we played." It may help if you ask more specific questions. For example, "What stories did you read today?" "What center was your favorite today?" "Did you make a new friend today?"  "What was his/her name?"

Math:
We are currently working in chapter one of our new math series, GOmath. This is a new series for your kiddos and me. I am really enjoying all of the technology pieces that are available along with the student workbooks. You won't be seeing many math worksheets come home due to the workbooks. Our math work is done in the workbooks and it will be sent home when the chapter is through. Chapter one really focuses on the numbers 0-5.  We are comparing them (more, less, equal, same, greater, less), practicing writing them, showing each of the numbers in different ways (tally marks, counters, ten frames, five frames, word form, numerical form, etc.) When the math workbooks come home be sure to check out the games in the front of the book. This is a great way to continue the learning at home.

Reading/Writing:
We will continue to work on recognizing and writing our first names. (When practicing at home please be sure that only the first letter is a capital letter; the rest need to be lowercase.)  We have started to practice the beginning letters of the alphabet. Once we begin our reading serious we will be focusing on four letters per week. The program moves quickly so any supplemental practice at home is welcome! I am hoping to being our reading series, LEAD 21, soon. I will keep the blog updated on when that projected date will be and certain topics we will be covering.
