This Week in Kindergarten..

This week is Red Ribbon Week at Meadowlark. It is a week where we, as a school, take a stand against drugs. Throughout this week we have different themed days. They are as follows:

Monday: United We Stand; (wear red, white, and blue)
Tuesday: Boot out drugs!; (wear your western gear)
Wednesday: Drugs Stink, Wear Pink!
Thursday: Too Cool for Drugs; (wear your sunglasses)
Friday: Follow Your Dreams, Don't Do Drugs! (wear your favorite team's attire)

We encourage the whole school to dress up.

Along with Red Ribbon Week, this week is also Halloween. We will be doing fun, academic, and halloween themed activities all week long. In kindergarten there is some confusion when it comes to costumes. We DO NOT wear costumes to school. I do love to hear the stories and details of each and every costume.  This is an exciting time for all kids and I love to share in the excitement!

Thank you for your continued support. I cannot believe this Friday marks the end of the first quarter of kindergarden. I am looking forward to sitting down with all of you over parent teacher conferences. Hope everyone is having a great week!

READING UPDATE:
We are in full wing with our reading routine. We are in the middle of our first unit of LEAD 21. We are currently learning about how each and every one of us is made unique, what makes each one of us special, and how our feelings effect ourselves and others. I am so excited to be starting LEAD 21 with your kiddos. Throughout the unit we are learning all kinds of reading strategies like pictures walks, determining important information, making predictions, comprehension, etc. All things that you can practice at home while reading to your child.
Throughout this unit we are working with a few sight words as well. These are words your child should learn by heart.
SIGHT WORDS WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON:
theI,see, a, an, am, at, in, it, is, here
(An easy way to practice with sight words, besides flashcards, is to have your child find and highlight the sight words in the newspaper or their favorite magazine.)

We are also working on holding a pencil the correct way, the correct letter formation, and finding the alphabet in all kinds of different print and fonts. We are also working on learning ALL of the letter sounds. This is a key component in teaching your child to read. He/she will need to be fluent with ALL letter sounds.

MATH UPDATE:
We will continue to work on number recognition, focusing really on 0-10. We are also working on comparing numbers 0-10. (Which number is bigger? Which number is smaller? Are the numbers the same or equal?) The math game for this month focuses on this skill. We are moving into decomposing numbers into pairs. (For example: 5 can be split up into a group of 2 and a group of three, or a group of 4 and 1)  Please continue counting orally with your child. In kindergarten your child is expected to count from 1 to 100 fluently. Practice helps with this.
